Accolades for Colossus of Destiny
This may be the weirdest Melvins CD yet and that's saying something. It consists of about 50 minutes of feedback and sampled voices followed by a crushing blast through the classic "Eye Flys" from Gluey Porch Treatments. You should be warned that this disc requires a very open mind. Some fans mistake this and their other more "out there" stuff, like Prick or Electroretard, for some kind of in-joke or tossed off crap. Trust me, there is music here. Very rewarding music at that, but it is not going to jump right out at you. You must challenge yourself to find it. When you do though, you'll love it. I promise.
This album is some of the best and most interesting work the Melvins have ever done. It's a glimpse of what falling into madness must sound like. It's very strange in that it has little traditional music and almost nothing in the way of songs. However, for those willing to explore the boundaries of both rock music and music in general, pick up Colossus of Destiny. You might just have a premonition about where music seems destined to go.
I think it's great that a band has the balls to do an hour long "noise" set to a sold out crowd and then release it. I love comedy! Ha ha ha ha! Long live the world's biggest jerks.
