Accolades for
Split LP

The Golden Dawn takes the classic Church of Misery sound and tweaks it with some sinister drone-like ambiance. What I've always liked about Church of Misery is that they take their sludge with a heapin' amount of blues rock. The Golden Dawn has plenty of sweet soloing over the buzzing hum of the bass and drums. And because the band never strays from the macabre, Aleister Crowley can be heard muttering something sinister throughout the song. It's a good progression from what they delivered on Second Coming.

The Gateway Was Broken and Lightening Rod, Deer Creek's two original contributions, are strong, focused slabs of slow and heavy metal. The Gateway Was Broken has a pummeling rhythm to it, adding an almost hardcore like vibe to their doom. Lightening Rod starts off a little weird, with chanting sampled from some movie, then kicks into an anthemic groove. I caught a whiff of true doomsters Reverend Bizarre towards the end of the song. Doom fans ought to check this out.
