Accolades for The Sound of Shit Happening
Zen could have been straight out of the late 60's, early 70's with their classic sounding approach, beautiful harmonies and terrific psychedelic jaunts. For a three piece, these guys have soul and that seems to be a major aspect to how well they get their point across. These guys do produce a very classic sound complete with vintage gear and vintage recording production making it very real and very warm It sounds like a cross between Mudhoney, Screaming Trees, Blue Cheer, and Velvet Underground. These guys have a keen classic pop rock sense and it works well. Check out Zen if you like psychedelic classic rock stuff with keyboards from time to time thrown in. The melodic harmonies remind me of White Album era Beatles or more recently Big Elf. Definitely a must if you are a fan of either band, or a fan of Sir Lord Baltimore.
Zen remind me of one of those bands you often hear on Lost Relics radio shows on the far left of the dial at 3 AM. The kind of jazzy, folky, gurgly, psychedelic protest music that served as underground rock in the late 60s. The lyrics are dead-on accurate wall-staring drug-speak and that freedom rock vibe is pretty overwhelming. The Sound of Shit Happening never raises the tempo beyond a loping Nyquil buzz. If you dig getting real, real gone on the Starship Goodvibes, consider this one a first class ticket.
