Accolades for Self Titled
For Collapsar, their take on the formula perfected by Keelhaul is to eschew vocals and a bassist and shellac the proceedings with some well-used synthesizers. The synthesizers is used really effectively, beefing up the mood of the frantic, energetic album. This is an album for those who prefer hyperactive riffage. Collapser fit somewhere between the uber prog of Zebulon Pike and the more structured Trephine.
Collapsar has no need for lyrics. They have need for riffs. Massive, metallic riffs. Orchestral riffs. Guitar, bass and drum riffs. Arpeggiated riffs. Eight tracks of strung together riffs, slamming into each other, building up, finding the solo, bending the notes, breaking the groove, rolling the tom, pounding the riff. Play it again. And again.
This is definitely one for those into stuttered rhythms, mangled time signatures, winding math rock riffs, and then some. They definitely throw their own spice into the mix with strange dual guitar harmonies and dissonant chord phrasings, not to mention some spacey synth undercurrents from time to time, oh and there's no bass! Just two guitars, drums, and some synth work on occasion.
