Accolades for Vatic
Complex song structures, riffing that alternates between Melvins/Sabbath sludge, Jesus Lizard-esque dissonance, repetetive chugging that sometimes reminds me of the late, great Helmet, and vocals that alternate between gruff shouting and clean singing. Some of you may remember a band from Cleveland called Craw? Well, I'm not exactly sure why, but this reminds me a lot of those guys as well.
Fans of everything from Unsane to the Jesus Lizard will dig this CD. Figure of Merit are one of those bands that use math, but respectively. Lots of driving tempos and weird guitars that go from stop and start power chords to angular picked chords to just ear piercing feedback. All the songs are loud and in your face. I could see these guys on a bill with everything from Stinking Lizaveta, Dillinger Escape Plan to Will Haven.
