Accolades for Gran Poder
Orthodox go beyond the usual hum-drum and create something magnificent with Gran Poder. Theres more depth and emotion in the 27 minutes of Geryons Throne than most bands can muster throughout their entire existence. Its epic doom, building to a massive crescendo, and laying it on thick before getting to that point. The following track, Arrodillate Ante La Madera y La Piedra, picks up where Geryons Throne left off literally. The out of control drum solo is at the beginning, and once thats out of the way, the band lashes out with some Melvins, Sunn0)))-like ambient hate. And thats the beauty of a band like Orthodox. They exist comfortably within the confines of doom, but that doesnt stop them from turning the genre on its ear. They play with the ambience of slower-than-fuck music and twist it around until it conforms to their desires. Theres no orthodoxy here its just innovative music thats worth checking out.
