Accolades for Self Titled
Man, this disc is just what I've been needing lately. El Buzzard plays sludgy noise-rock just the way I like it, loud, pissed and abrasive with no bullshit. El Buzzard lays down 11 riff driven tracks in just a little over 22 minutes. One thing is certain though, El Buzzard packs more gritty beats, groovy riffs and all around changes in mere two minute songs than some bands can include in an 8 minute number. Every song moves at a driving pace, but there are some bluesy leads and southern sludge tinged riffs that change things up a bit and a little bit of sampling here and there..all which add to the overall flavor of the sound. El Buzzard reminds me a bit of Unsane, The Melvins and Cavity but their sound is rich with classic influences, not just the noisy stuff.
El Buzzard has a hardcore post crusty/sludge rock crossover sound that reminds me of southern based bands like Buzzoven, Eyehategod or even like some of the more upbeat Bongzilla stuff. It also reminds me of early Jesus Lizard, and just about every other noisy outfit under the sun circa '92. The blend of metal, rock and heavy Sabbath style doom riffs basted in high energy and coated with blood thinning vocals. Gritty and rarely melodic and often times remind me of Dave Yow, or the Kung Pao dudes. Most of the riffs are just one after another of relentless pummeling. The sounds are very tight, and this band knows how to churn out the tough jams, and make it sound like it is easy. Check it out if you want a good shot of adrenaline.
El Buzzard seems to operate in that once-crowded niche of bands that play music too simplistic to be metal, too heavy to be punk, and too edgy to be pop. One would argue that their gritty distortion, doom-y drums, and relatively straightforward arrangements evoke images of the stoner-rock idiom, but that would be pre-emptive, not to mention unfair. Similar to the former REO Speedealer in intensity and tone, but unmistakably akin to Jucifers louder, less-restrained moments, El Buzzard plays unpretentious rock-and-roll that doesnt seem to take itself too seriously, but still manages to move the listener.
