Accolades for Application for an Afterlife
Rarely does a raucous rock band have the capacity to pull off truly engaging hard driving music with a strong emotional element. Disengage do what they do without any sort of pretense or egocentric blandness that mars just about any other rock band that tries to go where they go. They're pioneers, wielding a clenched fist around a microphone like a machete in a dark rain forest of crap. Busting out of the gate like a greyhound on an eight ball, the first track, "Pharmacyland," sets the rapid pace for this high powered affair of pissed off and pounding everything. Disengage are just as brutal as High on Fire in their approach, but a lot more human in expression and range. Disengage will give any band in the world a run for their money when it comes to being tight. In fact, they may redefine the meaning of the word in the rock and roll context. They are as tight as cancer is serious. The ass kicking continues throughout the course of this albums fourteen tracks.
A great mixture of Led Zeppelin, Black Flag and Soundgarden.
If you like your rock music to have a hard edge, then you really DO have to check Disengage out. The lyrics are intelligent and delivered articulately, the rhythm section's as tight as a gnat's chuff, and the guitar work is just superb.
