Accolades for Prospekt
Here's a Finnish band that over the course of a handful of releases has slowly developed an international reputation as one of the most interesting contemporary Krautrock bands. The aggressive Prospekt will hardy halt that gospel from spreading further. On the contrary the trance-inducing primal rhythmic energy which characterizes Circle's latest outing is bound to seduce even the most conservative record collectors who claim nothing worthwhile has been released in the kraut/space rock genre since Hawkwind's Warrior on the Edge of Time and Can's Future Days. But it's not fair to try to pigeonhole Circle's sound simply by name-dropping two of the classics from the early seventies, simply because these guys are so jaw-dropping that they defy any such simplifications. This is a mighty fine band with an almost unequalled talent for dynamics and eerie atmospherics.
Circle serves up heaping portions of aggression not heard since their earlier recordings. Bashing guitars and downright scary vocals that are screaming, but more in an operatic than a punkish style. But there's also lots of fantastic organ that adds a late 60s/early 70s sound reminiscent of the old Hammond heavy bands. Post-rock, space rock, experimental... this band defies easy descriptions, but the important thing to communicate is that the music is energetic, well crafted, and always exciting. Circle indeed have a sound recognizably their own. If you haven't yet caught on to Circle then this is as good a place as any to start. But beware... you'll get hooked quick.
