Accolades for Self Titled
Existing somewhere between the realms of Moss, Monarch and Khanate, they combine ultra slow doom marches with some edgier, higher pitched vocals. They also throw in the occasional upbeat or melodic part, just to make sure the kids are awake and paying attention. Not quite as monotonous as Moss or Monarch. The songs have no titles, just running lengths of 31:38, 20:11 and 14:12. So make sure you're not in a hurry to go anywhere before putting this on.
Like Moss, Manchester's Atavist push blackened ultra-doom to the breaking point. Inspired by Stephen O'Malley, they take an uncompromising approach to everything. Atavist don't so much sound like a band as a distant gathering storm, a weather system that soon breaks all over you. This is intense, brutal and raw anti-music. Utterly fantastic and recommended to anyone with a taste for the truly extreme. Along with the aformentioned Moss, this is evidence that there does seem to be something sturring in the lower depths.
Atavist are not well men. Theirs is the sound of every conceivable negative emotion channelled through the medium of cranium crushing doom nastiness. Ungodly vocals are pitched against the foulest sludge this side of a festival toilet, with bass levels tailored specifically for maximum bowel smothering discomfort. One for the masochists amongst you.
