Accolades for
Supercollider (Man's Ruin)

Sabbath by way of Black Flag with a little distorto-swamp stomp thrown in for good measure. More often than not, I get the feeling Florida's Cavity like to toy with us; delivering riff after fuzzed-out riff of sludge rock only equaled by the likes of Eyehategod, Buzzoven and the other dirge-meisters. The difference here (for me) are the just-grating-enough-but-not-too-grating vocals. Also, Cavity's tunes tend to groove a little more than those of their cohorts; as if the crocodiles in the bayou were imported from the land of congas and bongo drums. Or maybe these guys just found time to listen to a jazz record or two. Supercollider is a re-release of Cavity's four-year old, out-of-print Man's Ruin disc, but not knowing that meaningless detail, this could easily be their new album. Since the band is now broken up, let's just pretend it is, okay?

Jason Schreurs

The ground falls away in front of you. Beginning at the center it spreads concentrically outward, earth slipping away into the gaping abyss until you've got a hole wide enough to drive your monster truck right into. And so sounds the music of Florida's Cavity. Bombastic, heavy, with speed (sometimes faster than others) and power. Lots of people compare them to Japan's Green Machine and North America's Kyuss and Burning Witch, but of course there is no mistaking one of these bands for the other. They all stand strong on their own - highly playful and experimental in a time where hard rock has become taboo and its mainstream currents have run tepid and stale.

Cavity's Supercollider maintains the traditions they forged while exploring an album coherence. Cavity have done nothing but rock since the beginning, but now they've exceeded the rock aesthetic and taken it to the next level of artfulness. Supercollider isn't a "concept" album, but there seems to be a clear idea of making songs that relate to one another as easily as they stand on their own. Each release has been one step forward towards rocking perfection, all their stuff is highly recommended. Drill a hole in your face because you're never going to find a cavity big enough to fill with this band's sound. You're better off dead and not trying.
