Accolades for Lifesblood
The only thing I can say about Mastodon is that they are brilliant. If you are into metal in the least, go out and get this disc and Remission as well. In my opinion, one of the best drummers in heavy music to date and anyone who can tune that low and get away with it is okay in my book.
Mastodon may live up to the heaviness of their title, but they do their best to supercede the lumbering image. The five songs on Lifesblood are a crazed mixture of grindcore, jazzy arrangements and technical death metal. Vocals are delivered in a 'rrrawwrr' manner closest to grindcore and make for a suitable match for the careening, dangerously off-balance riffs and rhythms. Comparable to Dillinger Escape Plan in terms of technicality, Mastodon has picked up the gauntlet and ran with it.
A striking balance between virtuosity, songcraft and brute force, Atlanta's Mastodon is poised to leave its unique imprint on the heavy music world. The quartet, comprised of ex-members of Today Is the Day, Lethargy and Social Infestation, meld fiery determination with metallic and hard rock elements to create a vibrant, hard-hitting style entirely their own. Lifesblood highlights Mastodon's precise dual guitar attack and perpetual whirlwind drumming. Equally impressive and unnerving, Lifesblood carves Mastodon a place outside conventional sounds and serves as an unrepentant introduction to the boundless ability of one of heavy musics most promising new bands.
