An Interview with Dave Dinsmore of Gusto

If you take a close look at the lineups of Unida, Che, and LAB, you`ll notice Dave Dinsmore pops up on all three. Needless to say, when he started up his latest and greatest, Gusto, we figured it was worth our time to talk to him. Scrit brings the details.

- John Pegoraro

Scrit: LAB was one of your first bands?

Dave: Creature was actually my first band.  Bl`ast came next, then LAB.

Scrit: Am I mistaken that LAB used to be Bl`ast, then changed the name in the 90`s? Any particular reason?

Dave: LAB was an offshoot of Bl`ast, minus my brother Clifford.

Scrit: So it was more a personnel change-up then a change in sound, or the like?

Dave: LAB was totally different than Bl`ast on purpose.  Not to take anything away from Bl`ast but LAB was sort of the direction we always wanted to go in.  It was definitely more rockin’ and the three of us had the best working chemistry.  Mike`s a music-writing machine and we were all just on it, always looking forward.

Scrit: Can one find LAB albums anymore? (I`m having a hard time...)

Dave: I think only the band members have a few copies of the CD. We are planning on doing a re-release of the album and some additional material we have laying around soon.

Scrit: Why did you leave Unida?

Dave: It was a mutual parting of ways. We had different ideas of where the band was going but it was still a really great experience for me and when I talk to those guys, we think of those days as some of the best.

Scrit: Your departure came then before all that Island/ Def Jam craziness began?

Dave: Yes, I don`t know what happened with all that.  I was already moving on.

Scrit: Forming Che with Brant Bjork and Alfredo Hernandez, followed not long after your departure from Unida right?

Dave: Yeah, Alfredo left Queens, I left Unida and Brant was not as busy with Fu Manchu so we decided to jam and it just came together.

Scrit: Did you play any shows out to support that album?

Dave: No, although I`d love to.

Scrit: Was there any talk about extending the project? Like doing another album?

Dave: There`s been a little talk... If the time is right, good things could happen.  Doing a new Che album followed by some touring would be great.  Timing is everything.

Scrit: Gusto is your most recent project. You`re gearing up to record and release an album shortly?

Dave: That`s the plan.

Scrit: Can you elaborate on that a bit?

Dave: We`ve had about a month off while ‘Fredo did some touring in Europe.  Now he`s back and we`re ready to get in the studio.

Scrit: How much more local touring can we expect before that happens?

Dave: As much as we can get. Playing live is the best.

Scrit: Are there any demos yet that I (we) might be lucky enough to get a hold of?

Dave: We have a few floating around but we want to redo a few things and release something that we are totally happy with.

Scrit: Now Che was a 2000 album. What have you been up to in this long period between bands? You played with any others?

Dave: In 2001, we did a Bl`ast reunion tour that was great. I`ve jammed in a band called 7 Men with Dave A. and Mike Lofano from Mock and Scottie Stevens who is now playing with my brother and Bill from LAB in Busted Anal, I mean Dusted Angel.

Scrit: I guess that`s an inside reference?

Dave: Yeah, those guys rock.

Scrit: Dave A… Would that be Dave Armstrong?

Dave: Dave Aronovici. I am happy to be back playing music and looking forward to whatever comes next.

Scrit: Awesome. I know we all look forward to Gusto’s first album and thanks for taking the time Dave…
