Orquesta Del Desierto - Orquesta Del Desierto
Meteorcity Records
Available May 20th

Let's start off by saying it loud and clear : this is not stoner rock. At least not as we know it. But it sure belongs to this Forum, as the musicians in this band / project are surely enough among the best "stoner rock" musicians ever... We're talking Mario Lalli, Alfredo Hernandez, Pete Stahl,...

So what is it like ? It all starts with "Shadow Stealing", and suddenly all is clear : a great drum rythm (the whole ryhtm section works just great), super-catchy percussion work, and it then opens on this incredible guitar lick, like oriental/acoustic, the kind of small guitar riff that will get stuck in your head FOREVER. Then, Stahl's voice starts and it all becomes obvious, it had to be him. You know the earthlings?, you know Goatsnake... It reaches new highs here... Right in the middle of the song, there is this weird break with a really odd horn part coming from out of nowhere, and then it goes straight back to the song, that's just brilliant...

That was only the 1st song... Let's just say that they are all VERY different, but also so "rich" in sounds, effects, melodies, riffs, etc... Some are more mellow and moody (After Blue, Waiting for that star to fall, Alicia's song...) and others are "happier" (Make fun, Mary Strange, From this view, Scorned Liver...) but still have their own mood... And then there is the really odd Smooth Slim, with it's weird riff, really really weird, seems to come out of a bad tuned guitar or something (hey, i'm not a guitar player, i'm not supposed to know !!). Purely fantastic...

So there you go, you get caught right after the very first opening riff, and then those bastards just take you wherever they want to, whatever state of mind they want you to feel, they make you feel !!! Amazing. Emotion is the key here...

And by the end of the record, or maybe even after having listened to it for a few times, you will realize that it was all played with acoustic (OK, electro-acoustic maybe...) instruments only. And it's amazing, cause it's got so much depth, so many sounds, so many layers in it...

If all goes the way it should be, this record will break new ground, as it defines a new "genre" of its own. A new trademark in a way, the blueprint to a new kind of music.

Found this in my mailbox today and I started screaming like a little girl. Believe the hype! This is so damn gooooood! This isn't really a comparison meaning these two bands sound alike, but if you loved Sunrise on the Sufferbus, you are never going to take Orquesta del Desierto out of your player. I am very happy with this. Damn fine music to go along with my bbq tonight.

Never wished for snailmail to move faster! Just read through about half a dozen reviews of this record, and I'm itching more and more to hear it. It seems like I haven't read one bad thing about this band anywhere, and I keep seeing something good about it on every e-zine.

"Just read through about half a dozen reviews of this record..."

Really? Where???

"...I keep seeing something good about it on every e-zine..."

Where!?!?! I want to make sure the guys in the band see any/all reviews, good, bad, or neutral... direct me to 'em if you can. Thanks.

Most of them are directly linked to the ezines listed here on StonerRock.com. None of them are reviews of the entire record, but of a promo I suppose was sent out by Meteorcity. You can find these reviews on StonerRockChick, Aural Innovations, Cosmic Lava, and also a site I found called RockEZine. There were a few more that I read, but I can't remember the names of the sites right now. Not one bad review of any that I have read, and most of them write that what they have heard is "great," often giving the songs the highest marks on their various rating scales. I am hoping to receive mine soon.

It feels that this CD will become a classic, or at least that's the feeling I get from the reviews to the album. I already have it on order and I can't wait to hear it...cheers from Spain, buddies...

Orquesta Del Desierto

Meteorcity Records

Release Date: May 20th

First off I don’t know that I would exclusively assent this isn’t “stoner rock” (or what I coin “desert rock”) as it propels one aurally into a landscape straight off its cover much in the same way “Sky Valley” does. I’m not saying ORQUESTA sounds inaccessibly close to KYUSS, but sand will doubtlessly fill your eyes and the timbre of the oasis will fill your ears. I was anticipating an albums worth of material much like MAMMATH VOLUMES “Aum”, or LED ZEP’s “That’s The Way” and to my surprise that’s what I've received. It does have up-tempo moments laced with Spanish flare, but they don’t divert the attention from the musical trip this CD takes you on. Being as close to the border as I am this is an everyday occurrence in life and makes things commodious. I’ve heard people complain about the mix of the vocals and maybe it’s just my stereo but I don’t find them to be despotic at all. This is the first time I’ve realized just how much Pete Stahl sounds like Ian Gillian, something I’ve entirely overlooked on GOATSNAKE albums. This is a CD to languidly come down to on the way home from a HIGH ON FIRE or FIREBALL MINISTRY show, top down, wind whipping across your face while you stare blankly towards the desert sky, letting whatever substance procure retention. Lets put it this way, ORQUESTA DEL DESIERTO is going to make my summer in Arizona not only bearable, but enjoyable as this is the soundtrack to the ultimate desert party. Palm Springs anyone?!?!? “Lets go get some taco’s....”

I just recieved my copy of Orquesta Del Desierto yesterday and have listened to it three times all the way through... hoping to grasp a little bit of the gold that people seem to heap on this album.

I just don't think they deliver the goods here.

There are definately a few interesting moments, and some of the riffs are pretty decent. The musicianship is stellar, but overall the songwriting falls seriously flat. Very middle-of -the-road songs.

And I'm really put off by the vocals for the most part. With the few exceptions where I hear a nice falsetto, the vocals sound a bit too forced.

I am going to spin the disc a few more times in a effort to let it grow on me, but my initial reaction does not bode well for future listens.

Orquesta's debut is seriously rockin'! Pete Stahl fucken blew me away. I never thought he had that kind of range. (Surprises like that make life worth living, honestly.)

I didn't think I'd dig the record much, considering I ordered the live Dimmu Borgir album, Circle of Dead Children, and Myrkskog. Suffice it to say, the black metal took a backseat.

Never having heard of Dandy Brown, before this release, I've now got some digging to do.

If y'all want more comments on the record, just click the link below my post.

just another vote for YES get this interesting album... I just got it today & I'll agree with others about it sounding a little like masters of reality..I hear more of a western lodge & deep in the hole sound than sufferbus... not like anything these guys have done before...really soulful. Your girlfriends who can't take a lot of the heavy stuff will also like it

After hearing the Hermano record, and learning that Orquesta del Desierto was another Dandy Brown project, I immediately put in my order for this record. I really had no idea what to expect, and was actually thinking that it would be much heavier than what it is. Honestly, I was a little put off by this record during the first time I played it. Probably because I was waiting for the same kind of slamming riffs that are present with Hermano. At first I thought I had blown $14.00, but I tried giving it another couple of plays thinking that perhaps my ears would warm up to the thing. I'm glad I didn't give up on this record! For those who expect to be pushed back into your seat by monster guitars, you'll end up in the same situation I was in during the first listen. This isn't a record that is going to rip your head off with its nastiness. What you get with Orquesta del Desierto is a vibe that takes you down from the edge of anxiety and leaves you with a type of warmth that drips down from your head to your feet. The influences on this record are too many to be named, and in that Orquesta del Desierto stands alone. Listening to it, you think that you've heard this record a million times before . . . and then you come to realize that you've never heard anything like it. It is truly one of the most original records that I have ever purchased, and once you are able to leave your expectations behind you find that it becomes ingrained in your thoughts like the song you can't stop singing through the day . . . for days on end.

I bought this one because of the asscociation with Dandy Brown too. I wanted to see what all the noise was about. I have to say that he hasn't disappointed me with either this or the Hermano record, even though the Hermano is a little better. The Orquesta del Desierto record, in my opinion, has four great songs, and the rest are middle of the road. It is a record well worth buying, but as I've read above, don't expect the same kind of distorted guitars that you will find on most stoner rock records.

OdD is one of my favorite albums of the year. Even more than Hermano (slightly).
