Demoncleaner - Demoncleaner Review by: ”hogfeldt” (StonerRock.com) Label: Molten Universe Release Date: OUT NOW! CD
Demoncleaner is one of the Swedish bands that have been around for a long time. They have released a couple of great split 7” with the mighty Dozer and one fullength album before this selftitled one.
I remember that I was a little disapointed with Demoncleaner’s debut fullength ”The Freeflight”, not that the album was a stinker or anything... but it sounded just like the albums a whole lot of other bands had already released, the first thing thru my mind when I played it was Fu Manchu and maybe even Nebula.
This new selftitled album is much better, this time you’ll mostly only hear hints of that Fu Manchu sound... the album is still ‘typical’ stonerrock, but there’s room enough to have a unique sound even within this genre.
There’s plenty of great stoner tunes on this album with what I would call a unique sound, like for instance the opening track ”Freedom’s Prize”, a song with just the kinda groove that got me interested in this genre to start with.
Songs like ”After/Before” might have some Fu Manchu sounding ingredients but the heavy blues groove of this tune sets it apart from what the clonebands are doing with their songmaterial.
”Ruby” sounds a little like Blind Dog backing up Scott from Fu Manchu on vocals, ”The Aftermath” have some killer downtuned and fuzzed out riffs that sounds just like a cross between stonerrock and sludge... more of a slow and bluesbased groove than I’m used to hear from the Demoncleaner camp.
There’s only two tunes were I felt that the influences is a little to obvious, ”From The Ground Below” = Fu Manchu & ”All Systems Go” = Kyuss, but the last two songs makes up for that. ”The Seven” are a great, fast stonerrock tune that have everything in it that’s good about this genre. I’m a sucker for long tripped out and more laidback tunes, and that’s just what Demoncleaner deliver with the last tune ”Black River”, psychedelic and yet plenty heavy and all instrumental to boot, just the way I like it!
I have only seen these guys live once, and that was a long time ago at the one of the ”Groove-O-Rama” gigs at Sticky Fingers (Gothenburg), so I have no clear memory of how they sound live... but as far as I remember they were a pretty good live band back then, and since it’s been a couple of years since that gig they’re probably an even better liveband nowadays... and if there’s anywhere this kinda music would really shine it’s on stage, but 'til I get a chance to see these guys live again I guess I’m gonna have to make do with this album...
