Kemado Records fleshes out its stable of retro thrashers with
Hard Times Hanging At the End of the World, the debut from the oddly-named Children. Like labelmates Saviours, Children have their eye towards the Bay Area, circa the mid '80s. Unlike Saviours, Children are more epically minded. Only one song clocks in under five minutes on
Hard Times, and “H.T.H.A.T.E.O.T.W.” is the sort of quietly manic classically influenced interlude you'd expect to hear sandwiched between two “bang your head against the stage like you never did before” numbers (“Power Spirit” and “Subterranean Cities,” respectively).
So is it good? For the most part, yes. The band's far reaching aspirations at times were at reverse ends with the go for the throat riffs they were dishing out. Opening number “Advanced Mind Control,” for instance, is close to ten minutes and it feels that way. Prune a couple of minutes off of it and it would've been more massive than exhausting. But overall, this was pretty solid. Fans of Saviours and Valient Thorr will find much to like with this.
