Mico De Noche/Brothers of the Sonic Cloth - Split 10"
Review by John Pegoraro (StonerRock.com)
Violent Hippy Records
Release date: October 13, 2009

I know people are going to flock to this because of Brothers of the Sonic Cloth, the new racket featuring Tad Doyle, but let’s not lose sight of Mico De Noche’s two contributions. “Ganges” at first struck me as a better than average Black Cobra-type thrasher, but after the second listen I’m of the opinion that it’s a shit ton stronger than the last material I heard from that more well known outfit. Both bands have an emphasis on “crushing,” but Mico De Noche really lays down Thee Heavy on the second part of the song, where speed is exchanged for doom-like riffs. “Misanthrope” approaches song structure from the reverse angle - starting off slow and Sabbathy and then galloping off. Both songs show how formidable the band’s become since fleshing out the ranks with a second guitarist and a bassist (they were originally a guitar and drum two-piece). I’m glad they’re back on my radar.

As for Brothers of the Sonic Cloth’s “Fires Burn Dim in the Shadows off the Mountain,” I could just say that it’s Tad Doyle and leave it at that. After all, most of you know of the man and his legacy. But then I wouldn’t be able to talk about the nearly obscene amount of heaviness that the band dishes out on this epic monster. Imagine a song that has YOB’s psychedelic leanings as well as the dense heft of Buried at Sea’s dense heft but never once loses sight of how to flat out rock and you’re on the right track. I won’t go so far as to say the band’s heading out in uncharted territory, but with “Fires Burn Dim,” they’re certainly laying down the gauntlet in terms of quality. Even if Minsk just called and asked for their song title back.

So yeah, getting this is a no brainer. Highly recommended.

misanthrope (mico de noche) - a classic kyussic song that turns thrash after the midpoint. it opens with a unique yet familiar doomic riff that progresses to a machine gun like outro. the vocals are raspy, angst filled, and rise above the music to give away to a climatic guitar solo. being a guitar player myself, i don't usually pay much attention to the drums, but this track has great snare fills that make themselves noticed without being overbearing.

ganges (mico de noche) - a bit more fast paced, this song reminds me of corrosion of conformity. i continue to like the mico de noche vocals with this track, a shouted growl that actually possesses emotion instead of merely being obnoxious.

fires burn dim in the shadow of the mountain (brothers of the sonic cloth) - the vocals on the only brothers of the sonic cloth track are more buried in the music and relegate themselves as more of another instrument. maybe not the most accurate comparison, but this track made me think of high on fire. this track has a fucking great bass tone: heavy hitting, but not murky. the track is almost 12 minutes long, but avoids being repetitious.

both bands on this split display the faster brand of doom metal that isn't anything especially new, but is refreshing in its perfection of the genre. the doom metal genre has never been about cutting edge originality, but rather the progression of a familiar sound, and these bands are certainly a welcome addition. definitely worth checking out.
