Mean Mother -
Mean MotherReview by John Pegoraro (StonerRock.com)
Self Released
Release date: 2009
If nothing else, Detroit's Mean Mother does a mean Bachman Turner Overdrive. Track six of their eponymous debut, “Weekend Luvin',” is a dead ringer for BTO's “Not Fragile.” And yes, the lyrical content is about as juvenile as you'd expect. Randy Bachman wouldn't want it any other way.
As for
Mean Mother as a whole, well, it has its moments. The band focuses on high energy, melodic riff rock and when they've got the material to back up their intentions, as on opener “Cloud Nine,” “Dirty Mary,” “Motorhoney,” and “Legendary Softail,” they do the job. Nothing spectacular, mind you – I doubt the band considers themselves groundbreaking - but done well enough to keep listening. Unfortunately,
Mean Mother sags in the middle, with a collection of tunes that are either a little too sing-songy (“Fist Fight King”), a little too bland (“For What It's Worth”), and a little too reminiscent of a sophomoric BTO (“Weekend Luvin'”). Basically, if there was a showcase for current gen stoner rock bands, I'd say there was room for them on the bill, but it would definitely be an opening slot.
