Melon – Never Eat on an Empty Stomach Review by Mirza Gazic (StonerRock.com) Release Date: 2009 Label: Milltown Booking
Last year Melon released a strong EP called Mirage, brimming with intent and full of good rock songs that carried a strong stoner rock influence. Now they are back with a full length debut album that sees their sound refined. They sound more rock’n roll with a few hints of desert-like jams and sun-fried space-outs interspersed rather than a full on stoner band. It's probably for the better and will help them from getting stuck in the same category for too long. Never Eat on an Empty Stomach even starts of with something resembling grunge in “Homesick Moth” before continuing into a Jane’s Addiction-like anthemic digression. “There’s a Monster at the End of this Song” is another tune deep into more classic rock with a solid groove rather than being full of slow jams, even if there are a few of those interspersed throughout.
This is a band with a plethora of influences which they let to breathe on Never Eat on an Empty Stomach but the loud guitars are a constant throughout. It’s an eclectic mix from an unknown proposition that could well enough get much bigger should they have the necessary luck for it. Another thing well deserved of a mention is their brilliant and brilliantly trippy cover art.
