Earthless - Live at Roadburm
Review by John Pegoraro (StonerRock.com)
Tee Pee Records
Release date: October 7, 2008

The trick of free-flowing instrumental jams is keeping it interesting for long stretches of time. If there's a group currently out there that knows this better than Earthless, I'd like to know who it is. From my vantage point, Earthless is the cream of the psychedelic rock crop, and while that opinion was solidified well before I heard Live at Roadburn, the San Diego-based band's latest reinforced that feeling tenfold.

This two CD/LP release, recorded live and without any overdubs at this year's prestigious Roadburn Festival (You don't know about this? What are you, dense?), may take awhile to get going, but once it does, the band's impossible to stop. Disc one's sole track - “Blue/From the Ages” - shows the band (Mario Rubalcaba, Isaiah Mitchell, Mike Eginton) at their more improvisational, which probably explains why it takes so long for them to really warm up. Truthfully, they probably could have trimmed ten minutes off the beginning of this 45 minute beast (although at the same time, I'm not really complaining). The second disc offers a seamless merger of Rhythms from a Cosmic Sky's two tracks. “Godspeed/Sonic Prayer” is shorter – only 21 minutes – and more direct, picking up speed and intensity as it progresses to its godly climax.

Is this the album of the year? Maybe, maybe not. But it's definitely the live album of the year. Highly recommended.

I'm tentative to listen to this again, think I was in the perfect place to space out in awe at it in April, and I suspect that without the set and setting (and Haze) it'll turn out to be a bit of a yawn...

...but apparently not.

While Earthless is one of my new favorite bands of recent years, this album is not as good as I though it would be. That first song is a snooze fest and the rest of the album doesnt seem to make up for that.

More spins are required before I pass final judgement, but in the meantime - proceed with caution.

The new material, Blue, and From The Ages, spanning one lp and about a quarter of another, is, I'm guessing, what was to be their third record...and then decided after the Roadburn show to actually release the entire live set. If you love this band...well, you've already got this, or are planning to score it. As well you should! From The Ages especially soars well above range.

...my only gripe is that it seems a tad redundant releasing what almost fills the entire second lp of this live set with the exact material that was just released on their sophomore effort, Rhythms From A Cosmic Sky: Godspeed/Sonic Prayer - - on the latter they unfortunately never break out the main riffage from the first half or so of that tune, and instead focus only on the second half...which I think may be on the live 10" from Gravity as well ...dunno, haven't played that one in a while.

Still and all, HQ jamming all the way...although I must confess I would have much rather heard their doomiest jam, Lost In A Cold Sun, or even more glorious new material.
