Oresund Space Collective - It's All About DelayReviewed By Dinger007 (StonerRock.com) Self Released Available Now The Oresund Space Collective is a super group of sorts of musicians who make improvised electronic space rock. The band members are from various bands and projects - the only ones I recognized were Gas Giant and Stonehenge - and quite a few of them seemed to have played in Mantric Muse (whom I have not heard.) Sounds like an interesting concept, and It's All About Delay features two whole CDs worth of music. OSC do exactly what they advertise; they create huge soundscapes of spacey sounds and improvised jams that culminate into songs somewhere between the five and twenty minute marks. This is fine and dandy, except I found a lot of the songs to be samey, focusing on an idea or riff and just jamming on it almost endlessly, kind of the way hippy jam bands do, and sometimes the OSC gets dangerously close to that terrain. Other times though, they come up with something completely unexpected and surreal sounding. The keyboards have an awfully "modern" sound to them, and this album doesn't have the real "heavy" sound of vintage space rock outfits like Hawkwind, but nonetheless it's a solid listen from start to finish. Those interested in space rock and extended jams will not be disappointed.

Cool. Sounds like it might be tapping into the "shifting clouds" of Kraut sound that Julian Cope tagged the early Tangerine Dream. Thanks for the review.

A pretty fair review in regards to the 'samey' feeling of some of the tracks. I have had "It's All About Delay' for several months (as well I have OSC's first CD and all 29 concerts available for download from their website) and while I like them all, they do tend to start to run together in one's mind (although they don't seem as much alike to me as do Ozric Tentacles after listening to several albums). Overall, however, the musicianship is of high quality and there are definitely gems to be found for the listener patient enough to allow them to develop.

I'm long overdue in a lot of reviews I want to post here, but I'd like to chime in on one point. This band is a master of the collective groove. If you are into groove oriented music, this album (and the wealth of material on their website) will floor you. I go through periods where I listen to nothing but the OSC for days, and then take a break to get some distance. But then again, I do the same thing with the John Coltrane quartet and Fela Kuti-- two of the best groove bands of the last century.
If you are looking for songs as such-- or typical stoner power riffin-- this isn't the place you'll find them.

With the exception of Dr. Space, OSC has a new cast, and a bit more groove/texture oriented, with more things happening at the same time. But similar indeed. IHDLU was great!

Thanks for the honest and fair review.. Yes... you are correct that on this CD it is only me (Dr. Space) who played in Gas Giant but I can tell you that the bass player Thomas and Stefan (guitarist) have begun to play with us now as some of the members are in need of a break to recharge.. Stefan has played one jam session and one concert and Thomas one concert but both will play with us at the concert in Copenhagen on April 12th. All will be recorded and put on the net as always.. As for ILDHU, I have some amazing jam session recordings that may see the light of day.. I know they had a jam session last year but it did not come of anything.. NOt sure they will continue. scott

BUMP:
Folks-- I've been dealing with an ongoing family emergency the last few months that doesn't want to go away, so my previous long winded reviews will be getting a lot shorter.
Anyway-- I've been meaning to write a long review of this album for months, but I'll get to the chase. This is a serious groove band—and I tend to listen in deep binges for a few days where I just wallow in it—and then back off for a while. The shows they put on there web site is one of the greatest free deals out there—you can count on some deep hypnotic grooves, and yet know that now two sessions are alike.
So why by the loaf when you can get slices for free?
The answer is in the mix—particularly if you are wearing headphones. Yes, this stuff was recorded in a weekend or so. But I understand the mixing took months, and it is a freaking act of beauty. The way the focus shifts with the eddies and flows of the different musicians is simply too cool—and in the last couple weeks I’ve been playing this sucker a lot! For something that is so improvised and spontaneous, the mixing is the work of painstaking craft. So, if you DO like the sessions from the website, you owe yourself these discs with a pair of headphones. I won’t break down track by track, but the first disc has the heavier “rockers”, and the second one features a nice slow building epic suite and some others the will push your head into new areas.

I've only heard their 'The Black Tomato' album, and my infatuation with it leads me to believe that the new additions to the band have helped them immensely since the album Dinger reviewed.
While the Hawkwind still blows strong with these guys, I hear stuff that reminds me of Stereolab and even more guitar-centric space jammers, Earthless.
The Black Tomato has quickly become one of my favorite discoveries of this year.

I just checked out their wesite. Didn't know that all their stuff is 100% improv "with minor post-production voodoo...but no overdubs" The Black Tomato came out a year or so after "It's All About Delay". Looks like they have at least two more albums since then. plus, they have tons of live clips available on the site for free download.
