Really diggin it all so far, nothing on here that I dislike at all. Stuff that's really stuck out so far for me is; Karmadoza, Devil To Pay, Lazerwolfs, Gravitron and Tonerlow. Thems all well gud like. Need to listen more to get the rest.
Peace.

OK, I had a listen to the first disc.I have feck all to do in work today but not tomorrow so if someone wants to do disc 2 we'll have both reviewed. This revies is written after one quick listen so may not reflect my eventual opinion. This is just first impressions<-----my disclaimer

Fist off a general overview of the disc. It's a great collection of songs with such good diversity. It's amazing how wide rangeing the musical tastes traversed on this site is displayed here. The sound is great too. Well done to Bill's Brother on that even if he wouldnt let my band on because of the format of the song. No hard feelings ya cunt.

Ok, individual songs.

1.BERKO AND BENSON
Dancing On Swords

When this first kicked in I thought acoustic Nirvana for some reason but when the harmonica was introduced it added an unnerving element to it.It's creepy and took me back to my days as a folk singing pirate in Ireland. The vocals are just great.

2.KARMADOZA
Divine

The female vocalist on this track (and I dont even know why I need to mention the fact that she is female apart from the fact that it is something different) is the highlight for me. She has a fantastic set of pipes on her. Good song.

3.ROBOT DICKS
Black Tank

This is the first balls to the wall rocker of a song on the compilation and I'm digging it big time. It's punky and has some great screaming and growling. The anger brims over on this and it seems at this point that the collection of songs is a bit more thought out than we would be led to believe.

4.57 CHEVY
Sun Rose Twice

The first thing that struck me were the James Maynard Keenan-like vocals on this track but dont let that put you off.The music is a far cry from Tool and I have the feeling it was just the effects used on the vocal track that give that feeling. This is a very well structured song and a good recording. Kudos.

5. NECRODAMUS
Warlords OF Chaos

This is not my kind of thing really. The muddy recording of the guitars and the dead drums do nothing for a pretty good song and I'm sure they sound good live but are let down by poor mixing. There is a good lick at the 4min 30sec mark that I dug.

6.CALCABRINA
18 Wheels and The Gospel

The first all out stoner song .Me likey very much. This I can rock out to.

7.PILOTOS
Blond Guy

This starts off with a very funny openning lyric and goes on from there. There is some nice guitar work and is a fun song. I wonder if these guys are foreign. The singer has an accent and his insults arebt very good. "You're a fucking blond guy" wont cut to the bone. Ha.

8. Devil To Pay
I've heard a bit about these guys so was expecting a bit more from them than a Soundgarden tribute. The song though purposefully simplistic , lacks imagination except in the vocal line and melody. But listening further the layering of parts is actually very well done and ends up being a great song.

9.ELECTRIC MAGMA
Snail the Wah

The name says it all. This is all about the wah, which I love so brownie points straight away. I dig this song immensely. The bass tone is sweet and the song resembles Nebula buttfucking Bongzilla. The parts are a bit dislocated and the flow gets lost sometimes. But still. It has the wah.

10. CHROMA
Falling

This is a good song but lacks a certain je ne sais qoi. Maybe balls. The song dynamics are good and I enjoy it for a minute but couldnt get fully on board.Maybe it will take a few more listens. There is nothing inherently wrong with the song as such, it just didnt kick me hard. Good ending.

11. TEST-SITE
Oasis Beyond the Divine

Woah. Fuzz. I really love the bass on this track. This is an instrumental song that brings the dessert straight into your home. I can feel the sand in my pants. If you can picture Pelican in full Arabian getup playing to nomads while pumelling camels with snaking riffs and bongos....you get the idea.

12. THE HUMANOIDS
Sons of Odin.

This reminds me of Viking Skull. Not nessecarily sonically but conceptually. It's got all the things that make a great metal song. I'll be getting nightmares from the cheesey lyrics and the falsetto singing could pierce armour but this is a high energy metal song that combines all things metal. I want to get drunk when I here this and sing along. I think this is my favourite song yet. Slayer, Judas Priest, Metallica, Iron Maiden. You get the idea. Classic metal and more metal.

13. DRINK THE BLEACH
Freeway

Good groove here with some good double bass work. Its simplicity is key and its a strong composition and I love the guitar tone on the lead. Love it.

14. ARMAZILLA
Motorcycle

The twin guitars are working well for these guys. The warm fuzzy bass is lovely. Awwww. It's very Black Rebel Motorcycle Club in parts and there is a great breakdown. The dynamics int his song are rock solid.

15. EL THULE
Bud Orange

Wow.Nice guitar tone but the mix fucks things up. The drums lack the kick to drive the nail home. These guys sound a bit like my band so therefore shite. Joke. There is a good jam at the end.

16.THE NEXT HUNDRED YEARS
Everything I Expected

Very Dessert Sessiony with elements of Mr. Homme in the vocals. The layering in this song is exquisite. I got lost in between the guitars and drums. Solid gold.

17. THE CHAIR
Not For Long

Great grizzly vocals. Thats all that song needs. Good shit.

18. LAZERWOLF'S
La Media

Fu Manchu would be proud. This is cowbell rock done well. It's been done before, I know, but why can't we have more.

OK. Very fecking enjoyable disc. Im surprised.Pleasantly.

These are first impression, brief reviews of Disc 1. Nothing is personal, just because I don’t like something doesn’t mean it’s not good. Conversely, I may like it when it in fact licks pouch. Anyways, great job to all involved. It’s diverse and interesting thus far. Cheers.

Berko and Benson
“Dance on Swords”

The intro reminds me of the time I saw a Slovakian Folk band jam with a harmonica player. And it was more fun than it sounds. This was a weird and cool way to start the compilation. It was a little repetitive, I felt a nice change in the middle for a few bars would have kept my interest longer. All in all, interesting and worth playing again.

Pilotos
“Blond Guy”

I liked the guitar tone a lot. Handclaps and tamborine always rule. This was also good stuff. Straight ahead but they play it like they mean it. I’m normally drawn to vocals with more melody, but this singer knows his range and does the gruff thing well. I’m humming the song right now. The production was pretty good, but I wasn’t digging the mix. Probably good live.

Calcabrina
“18 Wheels and the Gospel”

Pretty good production, but bad mix again. Musically was too predictable for me. The vocals left a lot to be desired on this recording, maybe live it’s more commanding. Going for the Clutch/Pantera thing I think. Far from terrible, just not quite there IMO.

Necrodamus
“Warlords of Chaos”

I hope the intro was a knowing nod to Sabbath. The production sounds almost like a live recording with some vocal overdubs. An SYL influence in parts here. I hate the guitar tone. To be this kind of band you need an insane drummer, which is not present. These guys aren’t up my alley, but they might appeal to others.

Karmadoza
“Divide”

I hate the mix. However I think this song would be really good live, with the instruments kicking you in the chest through the PA. Lowrider/Slo Burn-ish guitar tone. I like the singer a lot. Very “stoner rock”, but the singer makes it rise above the average. I’ll listen to this track again.

Robot Dicks
“Black Tank”

This is Drunk Punch My Face Rock. It’s nasty, and filthy, but you kinda like it. I’d love to see these bastards in a small sweaty bar. The snare sound eats ass, but the rest of the production is good for the song. I feel kind of greasy by the end of this song. Word up on the ’88 bass tone.

‘57
“Sun Rose Twice”

Straight-up poor man’s John Garcia vocals. Sorry. The snare sounds horrid. I didn’t care for this track at all. It’s decently played, but predictable as fuck. I’d rather hate something than be bored by it.

Devil to Pay
“Neiflheim”

A little bit of Failure, a little bit of Helmet, a little bit of something I can’t put my finger on. Good production, good mix. I’m liking this song. The singer makes this interesting, but some of the fills and transitions are weak IMO. Pretty cool song all in all.

Electric Magma
“Snail the Wah”

Trippy psychadelic beginning that could have gone longer, and very Sabbathy. Too much so sometimes. Good production, good mix. Good snare sound! I’d enjoy this baked and loud in a small bar a lot I’m sure. On CD, it loses a lot of it’s kick. Good but not great. Lots of folks here will love this though, and I can see why.

Chroma
“Falling”

I like this song, but it feels new. I think it’s gonna be even better after some time. Jonas writes great vocal melodies and this is no exception. I love the layering about ¾ of the way through. This song gets better and better from the start to the end. I have this track on a mix CD – keeper. Mix is a little weak however.

Test-Site
“Oasis Beyond The Dune”

I really like the music. I don’t like the vocals. There’s some great tones and the production is good. There’s a bit of a middle-eastern thing going on at times. I dig the bassist, some rolling runs that sound fantastic loud. When this is instrumental it’s one of the stronger songs I’ve heard on the comp so far.

The Humanoids
“Sons of Odin”

Old Maiden mixed with early 80’s metal riffage. I like this a lot. It’s gruff and ridiculous on one hand, but it’s also kicking ass. The toms sound like cardboard boxes, but the mix is decent. I’d like to see these kids live. Solid.

Drink the Bleach
“Freeway”

Ministry-like distorted vocals with tight rock behind. Some nice drumming, a little Vinnie Paul never hurt anyone. The solos were mixed badly, but the overall mix was pretty good. Not really my bag, but tight and interesting.

Armazilla
“Motorcycle”

Apt song title. Dunno why, but this song sounds like a motorcycle. Not big on the vocals though, If they were sitting lower in the mix they’d be way better. The guitar effects at the end on the blues solo take away from it IMO. I like the progression a lot in the second half of the song, it’s probably quite powerful in a room with lots of speakers pushing air. Vocals gotta change.

El Thule
“Bud Orange”

Some good ideas, but it feels awkward. The mix is bad. Not my cup of tea. Others will enjoy this, I just don’t myself.

The Next Hundred Years
“Everything I Expected”

My band. Change your life.

The Chair
“Not for Long”

This song could be really fucking cool with a better mix. A nice change and the guitar tone on the solo is fantastic. I hear a big group sung chorus and over the top layering. I’m also drunk on red wine. Good job.

Review of CD2 after I cleanse my aural palate with some Huey Lewis.

My brief reviews of SR.comp Disc 2.

Lazerwolfs
“La Media”

Good production, although the mix seems a little studio-sterile. All the instruments are audible and sound pretty good, but it lacks a level of cohesiveness in the mix. The playing is tight, pretty straight-up for the most part. I liked the short syncopated part in the middle a lot. Nothing new going on here, but they do their thing well. I’d like to hear a few more tracks.

Iota
“Shit Luck”

I like this. Too much distortion on the vocals for me, as the singer isn’t just a screamer, but his voice is made generic by the effects. Really dirty, mean guitar sound that suits this band well. I thought the bass could have been louder in the mix, but this track had my head nodding in a few spots. This band shows some real potential.

Hognose
“Local Honey”

I like this intro a lot. Great guitar sounds, but the mix needs more bass guitar. This is a stomp your foot, get drunk and yell song. The vocals are standard yelling, but they are well placed and work with the song. Nice song composition as well, I wasn’t bored waiting for a change-up. I’ll check out more of this band.

Decendents of the Red Sun
“New World Samurai”

Very Floyd-ish intro, which is pretty cool. The production is clear, but too clean for this s t y l e. I need to hear more of a live off the floor feel for this to really grab me. The drumming is a little awkward at times, but fluid in other spots. I think there’s real potential here, but it’s just not quite there yet. I liked the Bass Balls in the outro – crank it up in the mix. Good mellow spacy rock.

Mescalero
“Crosseyed Rollin’”

Straight-up hard rock, and well done. Production and mix fits the song well. These guys are fun live I’m sure. There’s nothing I haven’t heard before, but again – it’s honest and is played with confidence. Not my usual fare, but I appreciate it. I’d go see them if they came to Vancouver.

Gravitron
Worms Pt.1”

I can’t really judge this on it’s own. It might be better in the context of an album, but on it’s own it sounds like a couple guys fucking around in the studio.

Swamp Donkey
“Safe to Say”

I like this a lot. The bass tone leaves a lot to be desired, as the guitars sound great. Pretty standard progressions, but it’s played with confidence. You don’t have to re-invent the wheel, but if you’re sailing thoroughly charted waters do it with attitude. Some nice time changes. Good song, good production, with some more writing these guys could write some great songs.

Tonerlow
“Grass”

You can hear the speakers being hurt by the guitars and bass. Good stuff. Very plodding, doomy intro that breaks into a strange whispered part. Creepy and when the original riff comes back it growls in a menacing way. This is well done, although this music is always way better liveI like how the vocals were withheld until late in the song, but again – too much distortion. I like tape distortion on screams, but too many bands are killing the vocals with too much stomp-box or effects rack distortions. I think with half the effects the vocals would be much more powerful. Good stuff, production suits the song.

Durga Temple
“Rock Juice”

I like the guitar sound a lot. This band is good, but the vocals do nothing for me. Bouncing 4/4 guitar rock, and they do it well. This song is growing on me the more I listen. If you get a singer that has more than the standard “Rock Yell” s t y l e of singing I’d be all over this. The singer isn’t shit by any means, it’s just that the vocals feel like an afterthought. One of the stronger songs on the disc IMO.

Uccultum
“Last Ride”

Decent production, but was far too predictable for me. Vocals need work. I liked the bass tone. Not great, not terrible, just kinda “there”.

Elephantine
“Black Stalk Motherfucker”

Sorry, but this is not good. Too John Garcia, bad lyrics, cliché guitar squeals. Sounds like a bar band to me. I think all these guys are capable of more on the songwriting end and if they steered clear of the clichés they’d be in a better place.

Calamus
“Once More”

See above review. I have this CD, but with better songs. They can play their instruments but it’s not going anywhere. The guitar tone is pretty nice and thick though.

Catapult the Smoke
“Devil’s Spell”

Really good production, the instruments all sound clear and real. I’d go see this live. Tight, steady drumming. I did feel some of the transitions were awkward (not in a good way) but overall I liked this song. I’d like to hear another tune to see if they mix it up and keep it interesting.

The Fallopian Dudes
“Siddartha”

Kyuss “Wretch”-era knock off. Not bad, but if you’re gonna sound this much like another band you should just do covers. I have heard way too many other bands do this much better. On the other hand, if you love early Kyuss and want more stuff that sounds like that, you’ll love this. Decent production.

Durga Temple
“Stoner (rock) Think Tank

Some cool riffs, but sounds like a drunken rehearsal space jam session. That snare drum needs to be drowned in the bathtub. I like the fuzzy bass. This is a baby song, full of promise, but still pooping it’s pants now and again.

The Kalen Lander Band
“Swing”

My drummer does this on the 80’s Roland keyboard in our jam space. It’s amusing, but I’m not going to play it in my car. Kudo’s for using that slap bass with bongos and the keyboard sitar setting. You have hundreds of these songs on your computer I bet. At least you don’t sound like Kyuss.

Planet Gemini
“Burning Laughter”

This is weird music. Reminds me of early Ween at times for some reason. I like the parts, but I’m not crazy about the structure. The guitar sound is weak, and the mix is pretty thrown together. There is something about this that I like a lot, but there are parts that annoy me too. Not too bad, but I wouldn’t buy it. If the recording was better and the parts were tightened up I might feel different.

Cheers for the review Sapling. The thing about the production; our Guitarist/Singer is studying studio engineering/music technology stuff and he submitted our tracks as a University project so they had to be really clean and crisp! I quite like it though, it's different.
What does Bass Balls mean may I ask?
Peace.

I focused on the production and my initial feelings about the song, as reviewing 34 songs by 34 bands in 2 sittings isn't enough time to get very in-depth. I also have somewhat of a background in recording so my opinion on the mix and overall production is based in some level of knowledge.

Thanks for not getting pissy about unfavorable reviews. I am only one guy. My opinion my not be how others feel. My tastes are not the same as many others here. I also tried to find constructive critisism rather than generic back-patting.

Cheers to anyone who is writing music, it's a great thing to be a part of. Keep it up.

Nah I have no problem with the reviews that Sapling wrote.. at least he took time out to write something. Sometimes it's better to be overly negative than to say nothing at all. However, just read through his posts and notice that he really didn't give 100% positive comments to anyone.. So no one should get all up in arms about his comments... it's all good to me.

I'll take a little time and sift through some tracks that stood out to me... positive and some negative.

The first song (Dance on Swords) stuck out just because I was thinking (WTF is this dude thinking).. it was so weird.. that you have to respect it's originality... I couldn't imagine listening to a whole album like that.. but very original.. and if someone is looking for something different.. this track should have peaked their interest.

Karmadoza - Really was a strong track.. and on first listen I thought that it should of opened up the album.. (However the first track was probably the right choice after listening to this a couple of times)

Chroma - Cookie cutter stonerrock.. Fantastic singer.. good sounding band.. fantastic melody to the song.. I would definetley check out some more from these guys.. they remind me of "The Quill" a little bit.. they could really benefit from a good producter to help them bring out some high end in their recording..

Devil to Pay - Love the name of this band.. love the name of this song.. probably the best song on the first CD..

The Humanoids - Okay.. This song gets honorable mention from me. Not because of the music or the vocals.. but because of the vibe of the song. This band set out to do a "Manowar/GWAR" s t y l e song (so sad that no one has mentioned this yet) and I think they did a good job. I loved the references to allot of power metal songs (Blood of my enemies, the hammer shall fall, Into Glory Ride.. Into the night the 4 horsemen ride..etc) and the "Louder than Hell" feel of this song...It shocked me that it was so different.. and while I wouldn't call them technically the best band.. I would say that this song was just FUN to listen to..

Lazerwolfs - I really like these guys.. even though some would call them "Run of the Mill" Stonerrock.. I think that they have that "authentic" sound.. they really sound like they are enjoying themselves.. I love when I hear that in music..

Elephantine - Okay (I'm hoping this doesn't come off as me being an asshole).. This band does have some potential.. Whoever is calling this singer "John Garcia".. must have been half asleep by the time this song came around. I'd love to know a little more about this band.. if they are a highschool band or what.. they have a good feel to them at times... however.. the lyrics sound like they are written by a 12 year old.. the wording, the rhyme scheme.. I think everyone kind of starts off like this.. I would like to fast forward 5 years and see where this band goes.. cuz I do feel that there might be a good place for them in the stonerrock genre.. the singer has a decent tone to him. Again, you shouldn't change for anyone.. (especially one mans opinion) but I think you would really do better to get a little serious with your songs (if this is the only song you have that is so childish then disregard my comments)

The Kalen Lander Band - hehe I'm going to be brutal here.. this song had no place on this album. I don't know if anyone heard the Rappin' Duke from back in the 80's he was a rapper who did a bad John Wayne impression.... I wondering if this is the same dude..

All in all I think that this comp is done by very dedicated people (who I will not complain about) and there are allot of good tracks.. but I think that there should be some weeding out and a selection process in the future. and before someone gives me the "I don't get paid for this" line.. I would propose a StonerRock.com poll. Next time put up 30 songs and say 13 are going to make it.. have the people of the site vote on who makes it and who doesn't. There are some tracks on these albums that shouldn't be here..

BTW.. Just because I didn't name someone's track doesn't mean I think it shouldn't be here.. it just means that it didn't do much in a way to stand out for me.

All in all I think that the production isn't terrible (considering the project).. and don't get me wrong.. I'm no expert.. but production means nothing if the band completely sucks.. so.. I wish everyone on this project the best of luck and I think that BillsBrother and Arz deserve allot of credit because this shit takes allot of time and effort and it's not something that is very rewarding in the end.. Plus you have to hear from people bitching about stupid shit that you have little to no control over...

Good job guys..
and keep em' coming..
This is a great way to introduce new bands to people.

I think sapling's reveiws were quite honest and I think sometimes a band needs to hear these things as it can help you work any areas that need attention. I agree completely with his UCCULTUM review as LAST RIDE is strucurally a basic song, and my vocals need work but Im working on it.

no, fuck YOU in the neck sapling. Arzgarth put all that hard work into organizing this free compilation for these bands that may not have any other outlet and then you just come in and tell everyone they suck. that's so not cool. it's attitudes like yours that are totally killing the scene. totally.

That may appeal to you more but you really need to take the lyrics to Black Stalk with a pinch of salt.
