Various Artists - StonerRock.comp Volume 5
Review by greenmathias
Featuring the musical talents of a handful of members of the StonerRock.com community, the fifth installment of the StonerRock.comp series does not disappoint. The 15 tracks on this compilation do a great job of showing how many unique bands and musical s t y l es exist within such a small group of people. This makes listening to the entire disk slightly more entertaining due to the many flavors you’ll experience in one spin of it. The following is a breakdown of each of the tracks and what I got out of them.
Madking Ludwig – “Firefly”
I really like the use of the flute in this song. That’s the big thing that sets this track apart from the others. There are some great guitar riffs in this song too. And I think the bass tone is phenomenal. The only complaint I have is I didn’t care much for the female vocals added in. But overall this is a very good song.
Skin Pappy Bones - “Smudge”
The track of this title pretty much sums this one up, Smudge. I really liked the guitar riffs in this song but I feel it was a little too short and needed vocals and maybe another riff or two.
Valkyrie – “Lost In The Darkness”
This is some straight up pure ‘70’s Rock! How can you not love it? Excellent production, excellent musicianship, look for great things to come from this band!
Graves of Endless Fall – “Neanderthal”
Listening to this track I can’t help but be reminded of Neurosis. Aside from a bad mix on the drums this song could have fit in very well on
A Sun That Never Sets. And I mean that in a good way!
Madman Mundt – “Kali Bomb”
This is a very interesting track to say the least. Madman Mundt seem to know their way around the hardcore. A very well done tune indeed.
PB Army – “Ashtabula”
I still crack a smile every time I hear this band name. A great play on the old Pabst slogan. Once again, they did not disappoint. “Ashtabula” is a very fun song to listen to. Sounds like something you would want to listen to while riding around in an old Mopar. Good stuff!
LowTon – “Yell At Me Keith”
A very unique sounding song. LowTon have an aggressive sound, I would have liked the guitar to be a little beefier, but they manage to get their point across.
Hydrozeen – “Pile Of Bones”
A decent first time effort from Hydrozeen. Maybe with a lot of work and perhaps some outside help they might be something someday.
Palace in Thunderland – “Sonic Throne”
This is a band I’ve been curious to hear for some time now. Very impressive stuff! If there was ever a band worthy of the title “stoner rock” it would be Palace in Thunderland.
Flypaper – “Shepherd”
Although I enjoy this song, it seems a little under produced to my ears. I would love to eventually hear a different mix of this song.
Reino Ermitano – “La Mariposa”
I’m a firm believer that if Black Sabbath had been from Peru this is exactly what they would sound like. Excellent work from Reino Ermitano as usual!
Ditchliquor – “Morningstar”
I have been praising Dichliquor for a while now. And rightfully so, as they are a great band. This track just highlights that.
Cudamantera – “Cimmerian”
An outstanding instrumental track from across the pond. Some incredible shredding going on in the second half of it.
Outburst – “El Diablo”
The first Outburst songs I heard were good but you could easily hear their influences. El Diablo leads me to believe they’re getting very close to finding their own unique sound now.
Village of Dead Roads – “Divine Mistake”
I was pleasantly surprised by the closing track on this compilation. VODR close out this listening experience with some pure DOOM. This was the highlight of the entire disk for me.
So in closing, seeing how this compilation is free to
download, why not download it and give it a listen? I think you will be pleased by a lot of what you hear.
