Various Artists - StonerRock.comp Volume 5
Review by greenmathias

Featuring the musical talents of a handful of members of the StonerRock.com community, the fifth installment of the StonerRock.comp series does not disappoint. The 15 tracks on this compilation do a great job of showing how many unique bands and musical s t y l es exist within such a small group of people. This makes listening to the entire disk slightly more entertaining due to the many flavors you’ll experience in one spin of it. The following is a breakdown of each of the tracks and what I got out of them.

Madking Ludwig – “Firefly”
I really like the use of the flute in this song. That’s the big thing that sets this track apart from the others. There are some great guitar riffs in this song too. And I think the bass tone is phenomenal. The only complaint I have is I didn’t care much for the female vocals added in. But overall this is a very good song.

Skin Pappy Bones - “Smudge”
The track of this title pretty much sums this one up, Smudge. I really liked the guitar riffs in this song but I feel it was a little too short and needed vocals and maybe another riff or two.

Valkyrie – “Lost In The Darkness”
This is some straight up pure ‘70’s Rock! How can you not love it? Excellent production, excellent musicianship, look for great things to come from this band!

Graves of Endless Fall – “Neanderthal”
Listening to this track I can’t help but be reminded of Neurosis. Aside from a bad mix on the drums this song could have fit in very well on A Sun That Never Sets. And I mean that in a good way!

Madman Mundt – “Kali Bomb”
This is a very interesting track to say the least. Madman Mundt seem to know their way around the hardcore. A very well done tune indeed.

PB Army – “Ashtabula”
I still crack a smile every time I hear this band name. A great play on the old Pabst slogan. Once again, they did not disappoint. “Ashtabula” is a very fun song to listen to. Sounds like something you would want to listen to while riding around in an old Mopar. Good stuff!

LowTon – “Yell At Me Keith”
A very unique sounding song. LowTon have an aggressive sound, I would have liked the guitar to be a little beefier, but they manage to get their point across.

Hydrozeen – “Pile Of Bones”
A decent first time effort from Hydrozeen. Maybe with a lot of work and perhaps some outside help they might be something someday.

Palace in Thunderland – “Sonic Throne”
This is a band I’ve been curious to hear for some time now. Very impressive stuff! If there was ever a band worthy of the title “stoner rock” it would be Palace in Thunderland.

Flypaper – “Shepherd”
Although I enjoy this song, it seems a little under produced to my ears. I would love to eventually hear a different mix of this song.

Reino Ermitano – “La Mariposa”
I’m a firm believer that if Black Sabbath had been from Peru this is exactly what they would sound like. Excellent work from Reino Ermitano as usual!

Ditchliquor – “Morningstar”
I have been praising Dichliquor for a while now. And rightfully so, as they are a great band. This track just highlights that.

Cudamantera – “Cimmerian”
An outstanding instrumental track from across the pond. Some incredible shredding going on in the second half of it.

Outburst – “El Diablo”
The first Outburst songs I heard were good but you could easily hear their influences. El Diablo leads me to believe they’re getting very close to finding their own unique sound now.

Village of Dead Roads – “Divine Mistake”
I was pleasantly surprised by the closing track on this compilation. VODR close out this listening experience with some pure DOOM. This was the highlight of the entire disk for me.

So in closing, seeing how this compilation is free to download, why not download it and give it a listen? I think you will be pleased by a lot of what you hear.

so far, these are my highlights:

I'm in love with the Madking Ludwig track. Just spectacular! I can't wait to hear more from these guys. Hypnotic, trippy, kind of heavy and mesmerising.

Have also been a fan of Palace in Thunderland for a while now. The few PiL tunes which I have downloaded from their site are always on high rotation chez nicster.

Ditto for The Reino track. Marcos was kind enough to send me their album last year and I love it. The female vox add a welcome twist.

The PB Army track is fun. Makes me want to get in a convertible and drive around while drinking beer (and I'm not a beer drinker). Kinda Fu Manchu sounding.

And Cudamantera, hell yeah. This is the first time I've heard any of their tunes. Digging it. Too bad that Mazrim is an utter gobshit. Makes it hard to *really* like the track because of it.

Thats a pity Nicster, I was always very fond of you.

I'm sorry Maz. I really wanted to use the word "gobshit" and because you're British, you got stuck with it.

Whoever is hosting this should add a zipped up file of all the songs... its a pain otherwise to get all the songs, at least a pain for short attention span freaks like me...

Is calling our song unique like describing an ugly chick to a friend you setup on a blind date? "Yeah, she's got a real unique look..."

Anway, we've got three other songs from the same session up on our myspace page. Some more stoner sounding, some not. Check them out if anyone's interested...

Is it just me, or is volume 5 not getting quite the response that previous volumes got?

Well, it just can't be good music if you don't have to pay for it.

Good stuff on this comp! Most tracks excellent. Nobody interested in it? They should be.... damn!
Big surpise to me was Palace in Thunderland. Great track! When do they come up with their album........ is what i would like to know.
Kinda dissapointing (to me, mind, taste and all) was Low Ton, i guess. Got stuff from the band (You bet your ass...) and that's excellent, tracks on the website are excellent (thanks for mentioning it), it's just this one doesn't do it for me. Sorry bout that.
What else on the comp.... hmmmm... King Valley, Ditchliquor, 57 Chevy.... all very good stoner. Had a lot of the tracks already though.... and hey, THAT might just be the reason people might be less interested in it?
just a guess. Too many tracks already going round.
But in the end it's just a very good comp. Comp.liments!

Ultra Low Rider:

We already have one album (or ep) out and it does include that same track. Five of the seven songs on that one are available for free download at our website in the "tunes" section.

www.palaceinthunderland.com

We are doing a split with Super Soul Challenger out of Maine soon, and we are looking to release our new full length album with 9 or 10 new songs by the fall if all goes well.

I can get you the first cd and mail it out to you if you want. Just Bmail me or email me at: monte@palaceinthunderland.com with your info, and we'll get that out to you as soon as we can get some more of them pressed...

Yep, we should charge $15 for this and have t-shirts, my little ponies and stationery sets made up with the logo and shit.

Then all the fucking scenesters will eat it up.

That Madking Ludwig song is cool, probably one of the most interesting things that I have heard on these compys so far...
