Small Axe’s
Public Thief is the soundtrack to that unnamed biker, the descendent to The Man With No Name, who rides into towns on his custom bike and kicks ass when not wreaking havoc.
This isn’t biker metal/rock like Motorhead or Orange Goblin. Rather, it’s punchy rock with a good chunk of honky tonk. It’s shitkicker MC5, or outlaw country fronted by Gibby Haines and dope slapped with distortion. In other words, good music for hanging out in a dingy, dimly lit bar, playing pool, and maybe later breaking a pool cue over someone’s head. It’s unassuming, because Small Axe don’t need to herald the fact that they’re badass. You can’t write songs like “Drip Feet,” “Another Blister,” “Muddle Your Brain,” or “Angel Gear” otherwise.
The low-fi production gives it a healthy ‘70’s rock vibe. It’s 100% Hell Yeah Rock, covered with an ugly grit and a good time vibe. Recommended with a deep pull from a bottle of whiskey.
