The idea was a simple one: contact the musicians in my record collection and ask them if they’d write a song if I gave them a song title. The result is what you hold in your hands.- Jason Ziemniak (Chrome Peeler Records)
You’ve Got Your Orders (Vol. I) was a shot out of left field, a gimmick that, for the most part, paid off well. Does lightening strike twice? For
You’ve Got Your Orders (Vol II), the answer is, “Sure. Why not?”
As with the previous installment, there’s a mix of experimental noise/ambient tracks and more conventional/traditional music (predominantly garage punk/early alternative rock in s t y l e, so if you’re looking for something that’s going to crush and slay, move along please). This time, however, the list of contributing artists doesn’t boast of such pop culture luminaries as Mike Watt, Neil Fallon, or Johnette Napalitano. It’s no slight against those on
You’ve Got Your Orders (Vol 2); in fact, it makes for a more interesting listen, as I knew nothing going in and wasn’t laden down with preconceived notions.
As for the songs, Nathan Larson’s “Insane Asylum White” is sparse enough to be less an actual song and more of a precursor to Vaz’ “Burn Down Baltimore,” a growler of a track that brings to mind Black Flag. Brett Rosenberg takes “Retire to Stud” and comes up with a melancholy, Beatles-esque ballad. Other highlights include Immortal Lee Country Killers with Rebecah Boynton’s “Dropping Motherfuckers Like A-Bombs,” and Brant Bjork’s “Cop Moustache.” The latter, similar to his work with Che and on his solo albums, is beach-ready rock and cements his status as an Artist Who Can Do No Wrong.
As with the first
You’ve Got Your Orders, this definitely isn’t for everyone (something Jason Ziemniak probably knows, seeing how both releases had limited pressings). But for the adventurous,
You’ve Got Your Orders (Vol II) will definitely pay off.
