Did anyone already got his/her copy? How is it? I'm pretty excited about this, but I can't buy postalbacks untill tommorrow, so I don't think I'll hear it before next week.

A longer review will pop up later, but in the meantime, here's my bump:

Overall impression – more highs than lows. Not everything is great, but the overall level of musicianship is outstanding. There’s a variety of s t y l es (and production values) throughout, which says a lot about how diverse the “stoner rock” scene is. There are influences from Sabbath to Iron Maiden, to AC/DC to Motorhead to punk to hardcore to death metal.

10. Pennsylvania Connection “Angel Dust”
11. Cudamantra “A Cat Named Williams”

13. Half of Zero “Gamma”

Disc two
1. Suns of Thunder “Tennesee Smile”
2. Melvin Gibson “Kill the Skipper, Kill Yourself”
3. Tormentula “Messengers”
4. Chimney Lions “Ghos' Inna Machine”
5. Artimus Pyledriver “Swamp Devil”
6. Rebreather “Pushing the Lights”
7. Mudshark “Get By”
8. The Daisies “Inferno Machine/One of a Kind”
9. Mongrel “Barnburner”
10. Elephantum “In Orbit”
11. Graves At Sea “Red Monarch”

To properly review this compilation, I guess the first step is to try to define what “stoner rock” really is. If you’re going to read about it in the popular music magazines, you’ll be amazed that you listen to something so backwards, so emotionally and intellectually stunted. Thick, 70s-s t y l e riffs, long-winded passages that drone on (good for bong hits, dude), and a penchant for singing about nothing more than how high you just got. Basically, you take the parts of Sabbath that critics in the 70s didn’t like and make it less original.

But as this comp shows, stoner rock is a genre that can’t be pigeonholed that easily. If the 25 tracks share a common theme, it’s finding an individual song’s groove and working with it. There’s a range of influences from classic metal (the “The Trooper”-esque “Bourbon Eyes” by Atomic#76), classic punk (Piss Drunks’ “What I Need”), Motorhead-inspired rock (Artimus Pyledriver’s “Swamp Devil”), drawn out stoner sludge (Elaphantum’s 11+ minute long “In Orbit”), hardcore thrash (The Daisies’ “Inferno Machine/One of a Kind”) and reggae (Chimney Lions’ “Ghos’ Inna Machine”). So much for reworking and dumbing down “Sleeping Village.”

Does everything work? No, some tracks I could have done without (and no, I’m not going to name names). And some songs’ influences are too close to the surface, pushing originality backwards. And since this is basically a collection of demos, the production on some is raw enough to picture the band in someone’s bedroom, crowded around a 4-track. But even the lesser tracks reinforce what I think is this genre’s strongest trait – a pure, honest dedication to the music. There’s nothing contrived or calculated about the songs on StonerRock.comp. It’s just rock, and it’s all good.

My favorite song on here is "Barnburner" by Mongrel. Shit, it's like a SR Skynrd. That song shines right through the straight-into-a-boombox production.

You can set it up however you want. The more branches you have, the more you yourself will have to burn for people. I tried to keep the number of leaves assigned to branches small, which meant I burned more than I would've if I had assigned more leaves to each branch.

There are other methods of getting it done, though, if you want more info just bmail me. Mostly it'll depend on how many people want copies.

Edited 0 Times My 16yo son writes better songs than you do.

OK heres my two penneth.

This is based on two listens. Firstly I congratulate all involved on a truly great effort. It shows the strength and dedication of this community. Thanks especially go to Balthazar and Sue for efforts above and beyond, to Arzgarth for preparing the artwork, all the kick ass bands who submitted their stuff and Sativa when he eventually does the liner notes.

If Ive forgotten somebody then apologies.
OK here goes. Its not that comprehensive but whatta ya gonna do?

Disc one
1. Behemoth “The Creeper” Nice punchy number to open up proceedings. Lovely crunching Intro.

2. Galactus77 “Locust Noose” Great Vocals. Intense sound. Rocks like fuck. Oh yeah, this shit is pedigree \m/

3. The Human Being Lawnmower “Pavement” Spacey and infectious. Very cool indeed. Nice groove.

4. Atomic#76 “Bourbon Eyes” As Arzgarth said, you cant help but notice the Maiden connection but so what? This song holds its own and kicks ass. Great stuff. Good vocals.

5. Mountain Mirrors “Field of Grass” Trancey number. A nice change of pace.

6. Omegalord “21st Century Earth” Bad ass rock and fucking roll.

7. Red Dwarf “Whiskey Devil” A different flavour again. Kind of haunting.

8. Piss Drunks “What I Need” Classic burst of Punky goodness. Nice bright sound and plenty of balls.

9. Wormwood Earth “Rice Burner” Quite simply, fucking Ace. Very cool song.

10. Pennsylvania Connection “Angel Dust” Sleazy low slung dirty metal. Cool.

11. Cudamantra “A Cat Named Williams” The best song on the compilation. Obviously.

12. Psilocybinide “Capsized” 70's production to a T c with strange lucid female vocals.

13. Half of Zero “Gamma” Nice ominous intro builds into a variable tempo Instrumental. Good.

14. Ronja “Calling All Wheels” A momentous muscular number that doesnt stop for roadblocks. Nice...very nice. Another one for the road.

Disc two
1. Suns of Thunder “Tennesee Smile” Great production and s t y l e from these hard rocking Welsh mofo's. Very Bitchwax/OG. Good shit. No, EXCELLENT shit.

2. Melvin Gibson “Kill the Skipper, Kill Yourself” Ambient and Hypnotic. Well composed. Another change of mood. I like.

3. Tormentula “Messengers” Nice Black metal edge to this. Well executed.

4. Chimney Lions “Ghos' Inna Machine” I couldnt get my hat on with this when I first heard it .Reggae isnt really thing but I and I say it be cool. Mellow and uncomplicated.

5. Artimus Pyledriver “Swamp Devil” \m/ Oh yes. My kinda shit. Bad to the bone road music. Great name too.
Swamp Devil, she's a hell of a Ma-chine!

6. Rebreather “Pushing the Lights” Nice solid number. Pretty good production. Builds well.

7. Mudshark “Get By” Light and airy. Nice to hear with better production. Potential.

8. The Daisies “Inferno Machine/One of a Kind” Old skool thrash kick in the nuts. Good stuff.

9. Mongrel “Barnburner” Deceptively nice first
half builds into filthy sludgey goodness. Great sound, great idea's. A real pound of sound all through. Fantastic.

10. Elephantum “In Orbit” Oh my fucking God this song is fantastic. Lots of variety. Beautiful and intense. A real journey. Epic. I love it! One of the best on the comp.

11. Graves At Sea “Red Monarch” Another great song. Very intense and tight sounding. The vocals arent my thing but thats a small gripe because this song rocks.

Lets see some more reviews.

You'll need to find somebody reasonably near you who has it. Balthazar and Sue started the chains but they've done their bit.

Maybe b-mail Sue and ask where the nearest branch to you was started. Then you copy some and distribute to ppl you know....and so on...
