Check out this article, and then the rebuttal.

Interesting stuff.

I guess the real crux of the matter is what people consider to be "great music". Is the The Sword? Some would say yes, some would say they're a derivative of other more popular bands w/ more indie cred.

To a lot, it's not a matter of them disliking the band because of a faction of their base are "hipsters". It's more so they don't like the band because their focus/shift doesn't hit them anymore. Though, I will say, there is definitely some snobbery on this board that falls in line with what the author the article espoused.

Good article. Thanks for sharing.

The dudes who weren't there five years ago and aren't going to be there five years from now. Not that I haven't gone through "phases", but I never totally abandon the shit I was into. Hipster metal is probably guys trying way too hard to convince you they know their shit.

Girl I know went to some hardcore show with me once and jumped around. And when she went home, she probably pulled out her checklist and crossed out "punk rock show". So she had "conquered" punk rock, she'd now been there and done that. And to those kinds of people, anyone who is into something for too long or takes it seriously is "boring".

It's nice to get some of the spice of life, but to doll yourself up into some classification for a short period so that you can say that you were there is a really phony, condescending, shallow way to live.

Yeah, we all go through phases, I go through a lot of phases, but I consider it part of the musical journey.

What I can't understand, is "hipster metal" played TO hipsters, or played BY hipsters? Or is it a little of both?

"Rock, especially indie rock, doesn't like heavy. It likes clever on the surface and comfortingly the same underneath, like how a manufacturer might take the same old bread, add garlic-mango flavoring and call it Polynesian Mating Ritual Bread and sell it for $1 more a loaf." - Dumbfuck in "Rebuttal" link.

I think it kinda proves the point of the AV Club article, he is, in fact, attacking the 'realness' of certain music.

Unless the artist states something is ironic, I think anyone who claims anything they don't like is ironic or insincere is a fucking moron. You can't know WHY someone made something unless they tell you. Acting like you CAN, like you can tell what's 'real' and what's 'ironic' is complete and utter bullshit. It's mindreading. And if can do that and this is what you are using this godlike power for, you're a fucking moron, I want you to shut the fuck up and go away.

I like what I like, I feel no need to attack what I do not like for insincerity of all things. Attack it on it's merits, why attack it's reasons for being made?

And most metal heads are close minded. It's a fact, you watch them react to a band shifting their sound or doing something remotely new. A large portion of metal heads fear change, they react badly to it. Go read Blabbermouth.net's review comments, those are metal heads, they are stupid, reactionary and close minded. They do not speak for all metal heads, but they are the loudest voices and they are uniformly DUMB.

Metal is for the free of spirit ... "true" metal is. Most people don't really like metal unless it's catchy. If someone can find a hook or a guitar part that they can grab onto ... they're sold. You know how many times ive heard "I like the music but the singing sucks"? People listen for a voice they csn familiarize themselves with. So if you write really catchy riffs ... get yourself the most abrasive vocalist you can find, This is a surefire way to keep hipsters not interested in your band for very long.
Also ... there's nothing anyone can do about it. Just like you told me you see fat girls with Darkthrone shirts on. But, did you see a fat girl with a "Vanhelga" shirt on? Or "Velnias"? No fucking way. Hipsters jump onto big names. Keep your band on the edge of "Underground" and "accessible". Walk that tightrope and you'll be "A-OK", and avoid playing with pop bands.

And by and large, the idea of "justifying" what I listened to never really appealed to me. I tried and failed to convince people that Deep Purple was cool when I was in high school. And you know, they just weren't having it. Music for me was always more my personal tastes than some group activity or movement. I guess that saved me from being a hipster. Thank you Jesus!

I deeply worry that my charts on last.fm don't measure up to a lot of others but, the end, I kind of just listen to what I like and deal with it.

Hey man ... I fucking Love Mastodon. I ahve from the first time I heard em'. I've seen em' a bunch of times ... fucking phenomenal everytime. Hung with em' prior to the Leviathan release, they were cool as fuck. brought a bunch of friends to see em' before they blew up, everyone left there a Mastodon fan those nights. Fuck if a bunch of people like em', good for them. I'll still love em'. I spend more time defending them than I do anything else. They fucking deserve and have earned their success.

For me .... it's raw-as-fuck-black-metal that will be my vehicle. NO ONE will like us. Not even so-called "black metallers". FUCK EVERYBODY! Anti-music is where it's at. Music that hurts.

I did not read the article, but I think I know what the hipster metal is all about..its the 'image first' approach, no?

With that said..The Sword certainly fall into that scene..does it make them a bad band? Not at all

I remember going to see Torche on one of their first tours through this area, and the Sword were the headliner..Knew little about them, so didnt stick around, was there for Torche.

Anyways..I remember this group of real skinny dudes hanging around the merch tables. All of them were wearing girls skinny jeans and real tight button up shirts. They seemed really out of place, ready for the club or something. Come to find out they were The Sword members.

Do I care? Alittle..as they try to reach out for 'metal credability', I cant give em much.

On the flipside, years later..Im checking one of their singles on youtube and now they're all bell bottoms and huge sideburns. Its too bad, because I dont hate em. Its just sad to see them a slave to fashion and trends and a borrowed sound and being eatne right up by the masses.

I don't even understand what's wrong with metal that is blatantly ironic(Melvins, Fucking Champs). Is Bruce Dickinson all serious business in his skin tight pants while he's grabbing his crotch in front of a 90% male audience? I think he's probably laughing a little bit. I don't think Slayer really worships Satan either.

Spinal Tap is still one of the top ten metal bands of all time.

Before this thread, I'd never even really heard of hipster metat but I think this whole argument is bullshit. I like The Sword, High on Fire, and Saviours. Mastodon has a few songs that I enjoy. My favorite beer is Pabst. Its just stuff that I enjoy and people writing off these bands because a certain people do too or how they dress is ridiculous. Who gives a shit, just listen and enjoy.

These bands are touring and making some kind of "living" doing it. They're writing music and making money off of it so more power to them. I may not enjoy some some of them and I may like others, but I have respect for all of them. Bitching about it isn't gonna solve the argument.

"Music for me was always more my personal tastes than some group activity or movement."

Agreed, well said.

This is sorta discussing what clarifies as a persons personal taste. And all this discussion about it is like an ego circle jerk. gosh-darn!
