Wow, maybe the most negative article I've ever (?) read about any band, certainly more negative than anything in recent memory that's not just a blog review. I think the review goes overboard. To be fair, the Voice has always had some horrible music writing, and they have always jizzed over plenty of horrid bands. There is a lot of different people writing for the Voice, and the music section is a mixed bag. So anybody who wants to say that the Village Voice blows, can certainly make that point. I'm not personally a big Pelican fan but they are a quality band and I would never totally dismiss them. Pelican is certainly better than a lot of the bands the Voice promotes. Also getting dissed in this article (although he focuses on Pelican the most): Baroness, Isis and Mastodon. I really dislike overly intellectual rock criticism ("When Eric Burden walked onto the Montreaux stage in leather pants, it signaled a paradigm shift in the counter-culture" - I'm paraphrasing a real sentence BTW) because it's usually about glorifying the writer, and not about the music. And in this case it's being used destructively. It's so harsh I hesitate to link to the article, but we're here to talk about heavy music, so...

I also don't grasp the comparison to Trans Am that the reviewer attempts to make. I don't see the major musical connection there (which he uses to rip on Pelican) and I would also consider those two bands contemporaries, chronologically. But I'm not a big Trans Am fan, either.

Actually, I think its very well written and reflects almost perfectly what I feel about many bands in this scene.

The article is more about the writer than actual music, over worded I think. "The same goes doubly for Florida's Torche, which often sounds like Looney Tunes composer Carl Stallings tearing through Helmet's late oeuvre in double-time."
A worse simile he could not have fathomed methinks.
Having seen Pelican live though, I must admit I agree on certain points. They were incredibly disappointing, and really boring - lacked the musicianship required for instrumental music to hold my attention.

i think he's trying too hard to be clever (he uses 'trope' twice), but yeah I kinda agree with him.

That article smacks of a freelance journo not getting enough commissions, so he's trying to stir up a bit of controversy to raise his profile. Fuck him!
I first saw Pelican at Emish in 2003 and they stopped me in my tracks. I hadn't heard of them so hadn't heard a note of their music before and I thought they were incredibly accomplished and confident, considering how young they were. Got all fan-girl on their arses and they seemed bemused by the praise. For that reason alone they occupy a special place in my heart and always will, regardless of what they do now or in the future.

yeah, he's making an attempt to discredit the hipster scene..and does so pretty successfully.
Calling them 'metal' and throwing bands like Torche into the mix is offbase.
Torche do what they do, no false pretenses...and I realize they are not for everyone, but cannot deny their live show.
Pelican on the other hand...

The writer even knows what Pelican is thinking... he accuses them of being 'insincere'.
Also, I don't understand how The Gates of Slumber is apparently superior to what Pelican does, because TGOS knowingly adhere to well-worn metal cliches... but Pelican is attempting something different and apparently that makes them pretentious. And AC/DC has dry hump anthems and an aesthetic like a club. But I guess Pelican doesn't. Or something like that. It's a little vague to me.

Pelican needs to change their name to "Unicorn Rainbows" and get everyone in the band to play a Casio keyboard. Something dancey, yet minimal. Then the Village Voice will love them.
Oops, too late... They're already too old.

the guy talks about 'platitudes' being 'lei'd' in reference to AC/DC. I might agree with some of what he says if I weren't so focused on wanting to punch him in his cunt.
seems the guy posts on the ex-Southern Lord board, which probably makes him a hipster with no real interest in music who's just a bit early in moving on to the next big thing and poopooing the current big thing.

He praised Gates of Slumber, but I got the feeling he didn't like any of the metal/post-metal/stoner-metal bands he referenced. Would've been nice if he had named a couple of bands that he dug, if only to provide some kind of reference point.

The man obviously enjoy's seeing himself speak. Although I will agree with the torche looney tunes/Helmet reference, I feel like his assessment of Pelican is completely offbase. He attempts to distract the reader with unnecessary verbosity, which to me botches any real logical attempt at giving a fair and balanced review. He seems set on what he wants to prove. Anyway. FUck hippies.
