Colour Haze - Burg Herzberg Festival 18.Juli 2008Review by JJ Koczan (StonerRock.com) Burg Herzberg Release date: Available now Quietly issued while everyone’s back was turned and intended as a stopgap to sate those eagerly awaiting the material recorded at Duna Jam in Sardinia, the new live record from Deutsche heavy psych magnates Colour Haze — appropriately titled Burg Herzberg Festival 18.Juli 2008 — captures over two hours’ worth of the trio’s set from the traditional hippie fest. Since their studio albums basically are intended to recreate the band’s sound in the most natural way possible, there’s not much of a leap in terms of how they actually pull off the songs, but like any live record worth a damn, there are tiny imperfections and changes to make it special for fans and other repeat customers. Since it was recorded after the release of last year’s All, several cuts from that album make an appearance, including the 15-minute title track, the über-catchy “Moon,” and “Lights.” A whopping 20-minute version of “Peace, Brothers & Sisters!” — actually shorter than the studio one that showed up on 2004’s self-titled — kicks off disc two, and “Love” is another highlight there, just as “Aquamaria” from 2006’s Tempel stands out on disc one. They go as far back as 2000’s CO2 with “Get it On” and “Inside,” which is the first part of a medley also including covers of “American Woman” by The Guess Who and Grand Funk Railroad’s “Into the Sun.” Pay close attention and you’ll even catch a bit of “Hey Jude” in there. No joke. If you’ve ever heard Colour Haze before and that’s not enough to pique your interest in Burg Herzberg Festival 18.Juli 2008, I’m not sure what to tell you. The chemistry between guitarist/vocalist Stefan Koglek and the rhythm section of Philipp Rasthofer on bass and Manfred Merwald on drums is a given, and though it’s all-too-easy to be distracted during some of the quieter parts (as on the beginning of “All,” for example) at an actual show, with it pressed to plastic, you get to delve into each and every note coming from the speakers without having to think about going to the bar to get your next beer. Unless, of course, you’re listening to the CD at a bar that plays Colour Haze; if that’s the case, please contact me because I’d like to come hang out. I was thrilled to stumble on Burg Herzberg Festival 18.Juli 2008, and as a general admirer of the band’s work, I’m glad to add this to my collection. If you haven’t yet been turned onto them, you’ll probably want to start with one of the studio albums ( Tempel is a good kickoff point, or the self-titled) rather than dive headfirst into two hours-plus of changing moods, tempos and volumes, but for the already initiated, this one should pretty much go without saying. Now if only we could get our hands on that Duna Jam record.

Having been a rabid fan of the Haze since 2000, when I first acted on the buzz IÕd been hearing about these fellows and picked up the awesome CO2, I have admittedly been a collector as well of some ÔliveÕ Colour Haze these last nine years. I donÕt know if IÕll ever be fortunate enough to see them in person being a Los Angeles resident, so I compensate (I also apologize as I realize I tend to start most of my posts off with fan-duration-pedigree-type prologues. Silly.). Any given band, if theyÕre smart, wonÕt release a substandard-sounding live show as an official one. Though it has happened in the past. The first Pharaoh Overlord live record is case in point (but to their credit, soÕs not to be a dick, their second one Live in Suomi, Finland is killer). Fu ManchuÕs Go For It! and Masters of RealityÕs Flak 'NÕ Flight are examples of quite the opposite. And when we come to Burg Herzberg Festival 18. Juli 2008, this live album sits firmly in that latter camp as well.
At a generous double-CD, 2-hour-and-nine-minute running-time, itÕs hard to go wrong. The spread of songs covers every album (except Periscope, which weÕd be extremely lucky to hear anything from that given its age), but that being said, as has been stated already, itÕs still not a good starting point for the uninititated. One of the studio albums should be. But for those already in the know, as has also been relayed, this is ESSENTIAL listening. This is a special trio of musicians, always has been. Sometimes its hard to believe there isnÕt another guitar player on stage with the mountain of sound created by Stefan and Philipp. And Mani MerwaldÉ forget about it. That dude is one sick percussionist and to date is still one of my very favorite nuanced, skilled, textured players. The interplay, give and take, and complementing between Mani, Stefan, and Philipp is one of the reasons you listen to music. Maybe it's just the great hippie-festival-inspired artwork on this record that encourages this feeling, but sometimes I get the sensation that Colour Haze is the modern Grateful Dead and Jimi Hendrix Experience rolled into one. Sometimes I fantasize about what it would have been like if they played Woodstock in Õ69 and blew everyone awayÉ Childish fantasies. But IÕm prone to them. This live record is a real journey, a long one, and if youÕve never heard them live before, you best get your butts on board and pick one up in ATH. Terrific live sound.YouÕll feel just great listening to this inspired, glowing, positive, affirmative music. ItÕs a fucking celebration man. Thank God theyÕre aroundÉ

This is an official Live record - though not THE Live record I'm still working at... was a solid concert, though not outstanding, therefore the Herzberg Verlag released it and not me, complete show at last years Burg Herzberg in ok audio quality (was difficult to mix which I did myself with Willi Dammeier because the stage sound guy had some strange views about microphone positions, guitar and bass mics we placed ourselves, at least therefore those sound ok) - we left the whole show uncut, including announcements, strange spellings (it kind of happened I called a song Pierce, Brothers & Sisters ; ) was a bit out of breath...) - at least finally better versions of Get It On, Outside, Sundazed and such then on the regular albums - and finally our Inside/American Woman/IntoTheSun medley so many asked for in ok quality - 129 minutes total, uh what else - yes already sended 170 copies to Dan two weeks ago and it's also available from me directly

I don't intend to release this on LP as well - not so important for me and I'm still working at the Duna Jam recordings which are going to be a 3 or 4 LP Box....

The recording quality is quite good and the playing is predictably great.
The live versions of a lot of the songs sound enough like the studio versions that it does not necessarily deserve to be considered a 'new' Colour Haze album, but is a nice between album snack.
