  Bolder Damn - Mourning (1971)

monsterastronaut ( Regular Member )

I couldn't find a topic about this record so...
Do you know the album or the band and do you like it?

This is the tracklist of the Mourning album released in 1971

A1 B.R.T.C.D. 2:55
A2 Got That Feeling 3:28
A3 Monday Mourning 3:05
A4 Rock On 4:11
A5 Find A Way 4:39
B1 Breakthrough 3:23
B2 Dead Meat 15:55

I'm sorry but I think I'm not good in writing a review, maybe someone else is and will write one?

In my opinion someone really should cause this record is really good.

All people looking for Heavy 70's rock well this is it!
I don't know much about the band. The only thing I know is that they went into the army and so there was no Bolder Damn anymore. I also think that Mourning is their only album.

What about the music? Well they rock hard with many catchy riffs, pounding bass and drums and last but not least good vocals. The songs are really good. In my opinion there are no bad songs on the album!
I also think that these guys could have become big. (If the army wasn't in the way?!)
I allready mentioned that their music is quite Heavy. In a way they seem to be kind of a proto-metal band.
The last song on the B-side is called Dead meat and i read about that song that when they played it live there were some theatrics involved. People with capes came to carry the singer of stage while the band continued to play, then they carried the singer back on stage in a coffin... ? At least in the song the singer says something like "you killed the man but can you kill the idea..." I do like that shit.

I guess they never sold many albums in 1971 what makes it even harder to find. There was a reissue somwhere around 1991 i think and also in 2001 on Void records (It's the edition I have).

This is a record for all 70 's freaks (and especially those who don't like the sometimes softer, folky, hippie 70's music)
but also for all die hard stonerrock or even the Real Heavy Rock music lovers.

I read about it at the Roadburn-website and had it on my to-get-list for a while. Just recently I found a blog with a download. That rested on my HD for a few weeks and I am listening to it right now. I'd say its as good as its reputation.

Its a very good album with quite a few memorable songs/riffs. Dead Meat is a lost doom masterpiece.

I believe they pressed a few hundreds (300? 400? 500?)of copies privately and that was it. Its a shame, they had real talent.

This would make it on my lists of overrated, what's so special about an album with only about 2-3 strong tracks?, nuthin' moderately fresh or modern even by 1971 standards. If it were 1968, would be alot more impressive. lump this with Fraction, imho!.

hey doom hound,
I guess that's where we have a different opinion. In my opinion there are more than 3 strong tracks. I even think many (hard or heavy) rock bands of today can learn a lesson from these guys.
1971 was the year of the release of their album, but they only made the album because people asked them. They were playing the music live several years before.
Also you talk about fresh or modern: well what they did with the dead meat song was modern! At the time they played it live Alice Cooper or Ozzy osbourne still had to make their name.

I used to have 'Mourning' on a cassettetape many
moons ago, but sadly it has disappeared. I bet they
were kickass in concert.
The theatrics of their shows: besides you saying that
guy was in a coffin, didn't I read somewhere that in
one sequence he was crucified to a cross?
Or am I maybe thinking of Fraction (moonblood)?

I like 2 or 3 tracks by this group. Dead Meat has that doom vibe sound that I like. The band is from Fort Lauderdale,FL. According to Acid Archives book 500 copies of the original were pressed. Reissue on Rockadelic back in 1991 with an altered cover,300 copies. Rockadelic issued it on CD and Void Records reissued it on vinyl.
